Toyota Hilux: Toyota Trucks Over Time

May 28th, 2008 | by admin |

Tell someone that you’re going to purchase a Toyota truck and they’re probably going to assume that you’re buying a Toyota Tacoma. However, this truck isn’t the only truck that Toyota has been known for over time. In fact, it was only recently that people began associating all Toyota Trucks with Toyota Tacomas. In the past, it was the Toyota Hilux that was most likely to come to mind when you were talking about trucks made by Toyota. And even today there are people around the world who are more likely to think of the Hilux than the Toyota when it comes to the company’s line of trucks.

The Toyota Hilux Truck

Hilux is the name of the truck that Toyota began making in the late 1960’s. The Hilux name was associated with Toyota Trucks until 1976 when the name was discontinued in North America. However, it remained in use internationally and you will still find that the Hilux truck is a commonly recognized Toyota Truck in other parts of the world.

A Truck That’s Just a Truck

After the Hilux name was retired in 1976, people in North America simply called Toyota trucks by what they are: trucks. They didn’t buy a Toyota Hilux anymore; they just bought a Toyota truck. Some also called it the Toyota Pick-Up.

Re-branding Trucks: Toyota Tacoma

In 1995, Toyota Trucks were finally once again given a name in North America other than just “trucks”. That’s when the Toyota Tacoma brand came out. In the years that have passed since that time people have gotten used to associating Toyota Trucks with the Toyota Tacoma. However, there remain folks out there today who will call it a Hilux and there are also folks who will tell you that it’s just a truck.
